We are currently looking for a Governess / nanny to join the Wood family at one of our cattle Stations in the NT commencing January 2022. Wave Hill Station is located in the Victoria River Region of NT, approx. 35 km from Kalkarinji Community and approx. 460 km from Katherine. 

Start Date: January 2022

Job Description: The role would be partly doing School of the Air, via Katherine School of the Air with their 4-year-old son who will be in pre-school. The remainder of the working week would be in a nannying role inclusive of both their 4-year-old and 2-year-old daughter. There will also be a requirement from time to time to assist with their youngest little boy, who will be 6 weeks old.

We are looking for someone preferably with a formal education in early childhood (certificate, diploma or degree) but will consider someone with previous experience in a home tutor role or as an in-home nanny. 

School of the Air Key Duties:

  • 15 hours a week, inclusive of 3x half an hour on air lessons with the School of the Air Teacher. Most probably in the form of a few hours each morning either side of smoko. 

  • Undertaking all school activities both on air and set work in the school room. 

  • Liaise with parents and school of the air with regard to progress and school work, so excellent communication skills are a must. 

  • Keeping school room area clean, tidy and organised. 

  • Attending school camps with family (mum and two non-school aged children.) 

Other Key Duties Include:

  • Nannying of children outside of school hours. 

  • Accompanying family to camp drafts providing childcare while parents compete, during the day.

  • Bringing children along on stock camp and musters, while parents work.

Essential/ Desired Criteria:

  • First Aid Certificate / Remote First Aid or willingness to obtain before commencement of the year. 

  • Driver’s Licence (Manual preferred). As we are quite geographically isolated, your own transport would be desirable (but not compulsory). 

  • Current Working with Children’s Check 

  • Early Childhood Education experience or at minimum, previous experience nannying or teaching young children.

  • A positive, flexible attitude and a genuine love of children and the outdoors is a must.


  • The Wood family are an active family who’s children love being out and about, both parents are hands on with the management of the station.

  • There will be plenty of opportunities to have an active social life and to partake in the station and NT lifestyle as the station has a large community of about 25 odd employees. 

  • Pay Rates will be negotiated on a day rate basis, depending on previous experience, all meals are provided along with private accommodation (e.g. you will have separate accommodation on the station and will not be living inside the family home).
