Job Description:
A unique program that can be tailored to suit your experience and interest, with exposure to multiple areas such as livestock health, welfare & performance, feed milling operations/animal nutrition, commodities buying, maintenance operations, livestock buying, feedlot management, administration and leadership.
Learning from some of the best in the industry, you’ll gain valuable insight into a variety of cattle feeding programs from short fed supermarket, mid fed Angus through to long fed Wagyu cattle with these roles being located at either of our two largest feedlots:
Opal Creek is conveniently located in the Darling Downs region, west of Toowoomba, one of Australia’s most modern facilities has undergone significant expansion and infrastructure improvements to accommodate 30,000 head of cattle across a spectrum of markets from long fed Wagyu, through to short fed domestic supermarket cattle.
Brindley Park is located in close proximity to the agricultural hub of Roma, running 18,000 head of cattle and is currently transitioning towards being one of Australia’s largest Wagyu feeding operations.
Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:
Located at either of our two Feedlots, Opal Creek (near Cecil Plains) or Brindley Park (near Roma) the “Trainee Manager” roles are aimed at establishing the core knowledge, understanding, management and leadership skills needed to start in the beef industry, in a highly practical way.
This program provides a wholistic experience across the four main feedlot operational areas that include:
Livestock: Approximately 9 months as part of the livestock team cattle handling, pen riding and processing of livestock whilst you learn the key principals of livestock behaviour, animal welfare, health, livestock nutrition and growth, recording data and interpreting information to make informed business decisions.
Feedmill: Approximately 9 months with the mill team understanding livestock requirements, and the preparation, mixing and feeding of cattle within an intensive environment. You’ll enjoy hands on activities including operating feed trucks, loaders, steam flaker, batching of rations, hay grinding & silage carting.
Maintenance: Approximately 3 months working with the maintenance team who do important work to ensure the health and wellbeing of our livestock, activities here include: pen cleaning, bobcat operation, pen repairs, post repairs, manure turning, general fabrication and fencing, water pipe and trough repairs.
Administration: Approximately 3 months involved with the administration and management team where you’ll gain broad experience in weigh bridge operation, accounts, payroll, invoicing for custom feeding cattle, managing safe place of work, quality assurance & compliance, budgeting and business reporting.
Job Requirements:
Enthusiastic and capable, up and coming livestock professionals who are keen to kick start their careers in the cattle and beef industry and who have:
Understanding of livestock production systems;
Leadership aspirations and demonstrate management potential
A passion for livestock and a commitment to best practice animal welfare practices
Some hands-on cattle handling knowledge and experience
The ability to learn and apply principals of quality, compliance and regulations including food safety, animal welfare, work, health & safety
Flexibility to work 10/4 roster that includes weekends.
Solid communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to relate well to a range of people
Sound computer literacy
Current driver's licence.
