Southern Gulf NRM is a community-based company responsible for education, planning and implementation of sustainable Natural Resource Management (NRM) in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria region of North West Queensland.

The Southern Gulf region covers 215,000 square kilometres and comprises the catchments of the Flinders-Cloncurry, Leichhardt, Gregory-Nicholson Rivers, Settlement Creek and Morning Inlet, and the Wellesley Islands. The region has spectacular ranges and rugged country and open, black soil Mitchell Grass Downs plains. 85% of the region’s land use is grazing with a wide variety of vast grazing enterprises.

Programs are delivered collaboratively with a range of stakeholders including landholders, all levels of government, industry groups, Traditional Owners, and conservation groups.

Job Description:

  • The NRM Project Officer (Pest and Weed Management) develops and implements programs and projects to support the achievement of natural resource management outcomes in the Southern Gulf region based on the strategic framework of the Southern Gulf NRM Plan. 

  • The initial focus of this position will be on feral pig coordination and weed programs. 

  • Your roll will be to initiate and support the delivery of effective invasive species management bolstering local biosecurity effort. 

  • This will include the establishment and implementation of invasive species management plans, surveillance and monitoring, implementation of post-flood disaster recovery and other grazing projects.


Location: Mount Isa preferred. Would consider anywhere in the Southern Gulf NRM region, Queensland

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage natural resource management projects including responsibility for invasive species density assessments and mapping, on farm project planning, works supervision, budget management, stakeholder management, monitoring, and evaluation and reporting.

  • Collate data and create an enduring knowledge and information base on invasive species across the landscape.

  • Partner with current research activities that relate to the development of best practice standards in management and monitoring.

  • Implement natural resource management projects by building and maintaining productive partnerships with relevant stakeholder, including pastoral industry, local governments, community groups, government agencies, project investors and Traditional Owners in the development and delivery of projects.

  • Knowledge of or ability to rapidly acquire legislation, policy and regional planning and awareness of developments in policy and land management practices and provide advice and analysis of emerging issues and opportunities for consideration by Southern Gulf NRM management relevant to the Southern Gulf region.

  • A good attitude and work ethic to contribute to the success of Southern Gulf NRM team through positive and flexible contributions to the management and administration of the organisation.

Job Requirements:

Appointment to the position will be based on the following selection criteria.

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent experience in Agricultural or Environmental Science or related disciplines.

  • Demonstrated sound scientific/technical knowledge of concepts, principles and procedures relevant to specific aspects of natural resource management, particularly invasive species management.

  • Demonstrated experience in industry extension principles and practices and in successfully engaging with and providing capacity building activities for the agricultural and land management sectors.

  • High level organisational skills and ability to self-manage to coordinate multiple projects and prioritise workflows to meet conflicting deadlines.

  • High level of written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate complex concepts to a wide range of audiences and utilising appropriate technology and social media.

  • Proven initiative and demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as an effective team member, meet deadlines and establish work priorities and achieve quality outcomes.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and document innovative projects, identify and seek funding opportunities and to set and deliver specific objectives in collaboration with partners and stakeholders.

  • A sound understanding of demonstrated application of monitoring and evaluation principles and practice. Experience in the use of GIS mapping technology and on-line MERI systems is desirable.

  • Demonstrated experience relevant to natural resource management in regional, rural and remote communities, including experience commuting long distance on rural roads.


This position calls for the ability to take the initiative as and when required and work unsupervised

as and when required. The position requires a sound general knowledge of the principles of natural

resource management particularly invasive species management, supplemented with one or more specific professional competencies relevant to the Southern Gulf region.

Job Benefits:

  • Salary range between $82,108 – $86,264 plus package benefits including:

  1. Housing allowance, phone allowance, uniform allowance and salary packaging. 

  2. Extra voluntary super contribution and travel assistance.

  3. Salary level can be negotiated within this range based on demonstrated skills and experience

  • Five (5) weeks annual leave with 17.5% loading is available.

  • Rent assistance of up to $5,200 per annum (pro-rata) is available.
