Drama in the Territory

Updated: Nov 6

'Marianne Station' is the world's largest cattle station in the new 6 episode drama series, 'Territory' released on Netflix last night. (In truth, Anna Creek Station in South Australia owns the title of World's largest cattle station).

The series did use a real cattle station - Tipperary Station a couple of hours drive south of Darwin east of the Daly River. Having been to Tipperary, it's an impressive station and given the rumoured comparisons 'Territory' has to Yellowstone, it gives the Dutton 'hobby farm' a run for its money. It's history trumps Dutton too, in the 1980s and 90s Tipperary once housed exotic animals including zebra's, hippo's and rhino's not to mention a giraffe; some of the large fences to contain them still remains.

Territory is directed by Greg McLean (who gave us the Outback horror classic, Wolf Creek), he said:

"...it’s a unique Australian lifestyle we wanted to celebrate and portray. We hope the real ringers and station workers enjoy it and have fun with it...”

“Most of the workers from Tipperary who deal with the cattle are in the show somewhere and what was fascinating was these guys had never really seen a film crew before but we said to them, ‘You look great and you can do the job, do you want to be in it?’ And they did these fantastic real performances. I think they had a ball doing it..."

Tipperary might just need those high fences to keep the tourists out and here's hoping the Territory series also attracts people to want to work on a cattle station... SEE LATEST JOBS
