Job Description:

Consider yourself to be handy, reliable and organised?  Could you be our next Head of Water Supply and Operations (aka, Senior Maintenance Hand/Bore Person)?


Bore Runners and Maintenance Hands play a critical role in helping us ensure the health and welfare of our livestock and that the station runs safely & smoothly.


Barkly Downs is 150km from Mount Isa in QLD, it is 942,500 hectares or 2,328,968 acres and is primarily used for large-scale breeding purposes with young stock moved south-east onto central Queensland properties to grow out. Carrying Capacity: 52,631 head

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Operations Manager, we are seeking a highly capable senior operator to take charge of the water supply and operations at Barkly.  

  • The Bore Runners work independently, driving company vehicles to diligently check diesel and solar pumps, monitor troughs, tanks & turkey's nests. 

  •  The Maintenance team enjoy variety that goes with monitoring, maintaining and repairing various property assets, plant, equipment, fencing, pipework and infrastructure so that it is kept in safe and good working order.  

  • We will also rely on their excellent observation skills, common sense and logic to notice, and promptly report any issues or potential concerns around livestock, fences and general infrastructure.

Job Requirements:

Specific experience in similar role on a station isn't required.  We're open to transferrable skills from a range of industries or professions from someone who is willing to embrace station life and will enjoy being a part of a large, energetic and diverse crew, sharing your knowledge and experience. Ideally, you have operating at a senior (supervisory ) level in another role, you're mechanically minded and you can effectively plan and organise the work that needs to be done whilst monitoring progress and providing supervision, guidance and feedback along with:

  • Valid manual driver's licence

  • Great communication skills and be able to positively interact with a range of people

  • Be highly reliable & trustworthy

  • Committed to working safely at all times

  • Sound written & numerical skills

  • Unrestricted rights to work in Australia
